When old gear just ain't worth keeping

It comes down to "if the alternative is nothing, how good does it look?". Out in the no-budget amature world, equipment needs to be

  1. safe,
  2. reliable
  3. not so fiendishly hard to use that no-one else will earn how

Age doesn't really come into it, especially for dimmers, or I would argue some lighting fixtures - e.g. PAT-123 can be life extended more or less for every because there are almost no plastic parts apart from the flex. Similarly, audio power amps work for ages, although desks tend to become high maintenance.
