Robin D
I'd pass the wire through a mic stand thread adaptor (small to large thread - technical term there!) and then crimp a ferrule on it so it can't slip back through. Then screw through into the mic and profit. Perhaps with a smear of locktite? I don't fancy that sort of lump (a good half pound) suspended over my head by a couple of cable ties....The OP stated a Super 55 which is about 1.5lb if I remember rightly. Of course there were never meant to be flown and would normally be walked on with a stand. It's a while since I handled one, but I vaguely remember that the hinge has a small gap between the body and the stand fixing. If so, I would be tempted to use a fine stainless rope to feed through as a strain cable leaving the XLR as a 'safety'. I think 7x7 is available at 1mm diameter, but do check it out with your supplier.
Easter5053
It has been said before, but I wouldnt worry about using a steel, the XLR will be fine, and a bit of tape will help secure it!
