bigclive
This is a series of tests I did with smoke fluid based on distilled water and glycerine. Glycerine was one of the earliest glycols used in smoke fluid before being displaced by the lighter and nicer smelling glycols like triethylene glycol, however, glycerine does get used in some fluids for extra density and persistence. The series of tests shows differing glycol concentrations starting with plain distilled water and then incrementing through 2%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and finally the uber-dense 50% glycol/water ratio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNnBjuvte_Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQzH8C70Nbw 5% and 10% (since I wasn't allowed to post all the video links.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTGTvc-tCIIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L6yte3elAk 20% and 30% https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPoA4AVC6echttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdb8KB40_-g And finally the 50% test that gave the pump a tough time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YifGAgeyo6c

bigclive
I have to admit that the 50% was quite impressive. Even outdoors it formed a dense cloud that drifted a considerable distance. Now I'm wishing I had some propylene glycol and triethylene glycol here to do a comparison. It would also have been nice to do it indoors in a controlled environment. jexjexjex
Clive, Thank you for some excellent reference material there, although as you say, an indoor trial would have been good as the smoke may have replicated more realisticaly what we deal with. (where I will be back shortly!) ...is that an old ACE smoke machine I spy? I can't remember the name of the company that manufactured it, but it's a Gremlin made by a UK company that may be no more. I placed an order for one as soon as I saw them at PLASA many moons ago because it was so cute. It's been pretty reliable in it's limited use. The company also made aroma units because I bought one of those from them too.
ImagineerTom
Then yes it is an ACE machine - a joy to see one still in action :-)
slipstream
Clive - you are my favorite evil genius - you should have lair not a workshop - wonder if you could run 100% through my Swingfog? PM me if you want to try next time your in Glasgow
bigclive
I take it the Swingfog is something like Artem were using for oil fogging? If I recall correctly they may have been building their own units.
slipstream
Their version has a pressurized can of smoke fluid and a propane / butane flame to heat a coil - the swingfog is basically a pulse engine with an injection port as an afterburner. bigclive
Hmm, I wonder what sort of viscosity it can handle. Pure glycerine is quite thick and actually quite hard to pump. The little test smoke machine I used in the videos was sounding very muffled with the 50% mix.
peza2010
I just lost an hour on your channel Clive. some great stuff on there.
bigclive
Yeah, I buy a lot of stuff just to take to bits, so with YouTube I can now save others having to buy the same stuff. Likewise I spend many happy evenings in other peoples workshops around the world courtesy of YouTube.
Young Johnstone
Your flame throwing doll video got posted on my Facebook wall this morning. I've see it before but cried with laughter watching it again! I too lost a good hour or so on your YouTube!
