Andrew C
I'm on my second IEC sized q-max. The thread is breaking off the bolt on this one too. And yes, I do use lube.
timsabre
Having had lots of q-max pain I bought one of these cheap hydraulic punches from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hydraulic-Hole-Punch-Kit-including-box-and-6-punches-slug-buster-/261398577481?pt=UK_BOI_Metalworking_Milling_Welding_Metalworking_Supplies_ET&hash=item3cdc91c149 They are basically the same principle as a q-max but the bolt is replaced with a hydraulic puller, you just pump it a few times. For a cheapish bit of kit it is pretty good, especially if you have to do quite a few holes. In theory you should be able to use the q-max punch/die pieces with it but I haven't tried that, just used the circular ones that come with it. Superpants
An nice alternative to the q-max are the Klauke/ Greenlee punches. They have an extra cutting edge set across the diameter called a 'slug buster' which cuts the punched out piece in two. this means you don't get the distorted piece of metal wedged in the die that doesn't want to come out.
