kerry davies
Take a 17 ton truck, put it on some ply sheet stage extensions, get it to jump up and down and Hey Presto! Seriously, though. Sticking 250 of today's overweight teenagers on stage at a dance event is way beyond most structures let alone pit covers as seems to be the case here. You cannot legislate for suicidal stupidity anywhere in the world.
Stuart91
The LA Times has a photo of the collapsed section here. Also there's a YouTube video from a different angle available here. As Kerry suggests, it certainly looks like it was the jumping in unison that triggered the collapse. The fortunate thing really is that the injuries weren't any more serious. Shez
Indeed - I had to arrange some tiered seating for an 80 piece choir to be built on an existing stage. That number of people weighs over 6 tonnes!
Gareth A
This happened in the UK many years ago. Birmingham Alex Theatre - Singa long a Sound of Music.
ImagineerTom
Although in this instance (based on the photo's published) it seems they actually just built a bridge over the orchestra pit and that is what failed - the bridge clearly being a "home-made" affair using 4x2 rather than some sort of steeldeck or other "actually designed to do this job" system. top-cat
It always astounds me as to how many theatres get seriously nitpicky about how you can only hang 100kg on their LX bars and insist you prove that all your kit including cables weighs less than 100kg. Then they get extremely nitpicky about all your electrical goods being PAT tested. But they have no idea what the stage is rated for.
