Digital Piracy

Hi,

My name is Stuart Dean and I am currently undergoing my third year of study at The University of Gloucestershire.

I would really appreciate if anyone could take just a few minutes to fill out a survey on digital piracy for me.

This would be a great help!

There are two survey's,

1. For people who are affected by piracy in there job or hoby etc', Record labels, Artists, Producers... - http://www.smart-sur...uk/s/71432QBDSS

2. For general public and music lovers. - http://www.smart-sur...uk/s/77908RWBRN

link 1: http://www.smart-sur...uk/s/71432QBDSS

link 2: http://www.smart-sur...uk/s/77908RWBRN

Obviously feel free to do both.

All additional comments on the surveys and the topic are welcome :)

Thank You

Stuart

Okay - I've attempted the 'consumer' survey. It makes little sense, I'm afraid.

1. If you must ask us to help with a research project, and you are a 3rd year student at a place of higher education, you ought to know the difference between there and their. You ought to know that surveys (plural) has no apostrophe. And you should be able to spell hobby. Or at least get someone to proofread the post?

2. In the survey, several questions are marked with a red asterisk. But there is no indication of what the asterisk means. Is this an optional question? A mandatory one?

3. Asking about income level without some indication of guide figures is meaningless.

4. Not all downloading is illegal. (Q9) Some musicians use free downloads deliberately to promote their work. Is listening to streamed music 'downloading'?

5. Answer question 6 with a 'no' and the following questions are meaningless, and including them in the results analysis will reduce the validity of the data.

6. Q8 looks as if it ought to allow multiple responses, but it's only possible to choose one answer. Same with Q10.

Sorry to come across as negative - but if this is really a serious piece of research for a final year submission, it's better that someone says these things now, rather than when you hand it in!

I suspect that this is actually a well crafted comparison survey, designed to elicit the two typical viewpoints and will be used to highlight the differences. We've all noticed that people seem mega polarised in their opinions to copyright. Me - as a music user and a producer have always been publicly in the 100% for copyright control and payment, but I accept that many people don't have this view. With this survey, I did both and when it came to the bit about have I ever downloaded something illegally - I realised I had to say yes, messing up my often toted opinion. The reasons were for me a necessity for a certain reason, and if I could have paid I would, but I didn't making me a bit of a hypocrite? Hence my wonderings on what the survey is actually about. I could be wrong of course, but it just rung the 'clever' bell with me?

Admittedly my post and the piracy survey made for the gen-public was a little rushed, as it was put together at the last minute...with the deadline coming up...but thanks for the lecture I'll do my best to check next time I post on this forum! :) (Y)

If you have the time you take my other survey, other people haven't been as brutally honest...but I appreciate that!

Many thanks

Thanks for taking the survey! I would say the aim of the public survey was to get a general idea of who downloads music illegally on a regular basis as I know a large amount of the people who do! But.. what I think you're saying is that you didn't pay for a track/single that was optionally free? Meaning that the artist gave you the choice to give them money in almost a donation style?

As a producer I would really appreciate it if you could take my other survey?

'How has digital piracy affected the music industry economically? With a focus on Record labels, artists and other creativity related jobs.'

Thank you!
