Alternative cheap option of moniters

Is it possible that you oculd use some small speakers as moniters when they are places on moniter stands at the right angle as we have a school concert coming up and it would be nice if we could use our old speakers as moniters because the singers start singing out of tune.

 

Any ideas?

But yes, depending what the old speakers are competing with. Not perfect but you might get away with it, depending on things various... Try it!

Monitors mat likely have a pronounced bass roll off built in to reduce LF feedback. You may need to eq the monitor send.

As already mentioned, you will definately need a graphic EQ to sort out the feedback which will occur!

Other than that, it should be ok as long as you don't run them too loud, I used some old Bose speakers at school for monitors, and with some harsh EQing it worked a treat.

small speakers can also be mounted on mic stands, getting them nearer, meaning they can also be quieter.

Ok unfortunately powering the monitors will be a small powerpod 150W without an EQ, This will be in a school hall with a tiny stage. Is there a way around this?

Well, if you don't have an EQ, you don't have one! Just don't drive the monitors too hard and it should be ok.

 

It will also help if you position the monitors in the microphone's 'blind spot' - for cardioid microphones, this is in line with the back of the microphone (have the monitors in front of the mic stands, and have the mics pointing upwards at about 45 degrees).

 

For hypercardioid microphones the monitor should be off to one side of the microphone stand, so the monitor is at about 45 degrees to the rear of the microphone, as this is the hypercardioid 'blind spot'.

We use some ancient HH speakers with an old PA amp without EQ for monitors in a school environment. Work a treat. Like the man says we point them at about 45 degrees and right in front of the mic so the mic doesn't pick them up too much. Just don't get them too loud. If you are using handhelds get the singers under strict instructions to point the mics upstage all the time. Have someone on hand to kill the monitors if the little dears point the mic the wrong way. In a school you have the person power to make that an important job for someone.

 

It occurs to me that if the singers are out of tune then it might be more helpful to make sure they can hear the piano (or whatever) than their voices. The little sweethearts aren't used to hearing their own voices (and may be shocked when they do) so making sure they can hear the instruments may be a more important consideration.

We use standard speakers which are used as part of a pa for speech reinforcement when our hall is hired out, but you could always pick up some wedge monitors for £40 each from thomann if you can persuade someone to pay for it!!! <_<
