cardboard skips

Hi Jamie.

The skips you're after are normally referred to as Tri Wall Skips. Now...I wouldn't have said this if you hadn't mentioned touring, but if they are for that purpose you should probably make yourself aware of the notes (and underlying sentiment!) on their use in the Touring Code of Conduct. If you're happy that they're still suitable for you needs you could get them from Robert Knights, Paul Matthews or a host of other sources. HTH

6. Packing of Boxes, Skips and Flight Cases

Production Companies are strongly urged to discontinue the use of Tri-Wall boxes (large cardboard skips) for the transportation of stage props/costumes/cloths etc. Wheeled flight cases should be used as a substitute, but safe working loads not exceeded. Tri-Wall boxes that are used must be in good order, must have the weight clearly shown on the visible face (exterior) of the box (when loaded) and the maximum weight must not exceed 50kg. Rope handles must be in good working order.

Staff not directly involved in the loading/unloading who pack items for transit will be given suitable training to ensure that boxes, skips and flight cases are not over-filled, top heavy or unbalanced. Weight markings must be on the logical visible face as the case is accessed for unloading.

I think this is the document being referred to:

TMA / BECTU Code of Conduct for get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs

a "good order" tri wall would be fine would it not?

Yes, it would be fine. The problem comes when companies treat Tri-wall boxes as though they were normal flight-cases and cram them full of props, tools, and other heavy stuff. On more than one occasion we've had companies turn up with Tri-wall boxes so full of stuff that they took four people to lift them off the truck and on to a wheel board. If a Tri-wall box is too heavy then it is more likely to be dragged than lifted, and this can damage the bottom of the box. Also, overloaded boxes can rip the rope handles out. This is not fun when you are the person lifting the box.

So no more special than any other flight case then, if carrying costumes / light props etc a "good order" tri wall would be fine would it not?

Yes, but you don't often see LX staggering up the stairs with their equipment falling out of a collapsing cardboard box.

They have their place but you can get over 50kg very quickly and then have to drag it and lift it will rope handles.

Guys, thanks so much for the technical specs, all very interesting. I am looking for some secondhand tri wall skips as I need them for costume storage, so they won't be shlepping around the country, If they are now not reccomended for touring, has anyone got any of the Tri wall skips that are surplus to requirements or are now a health and safety issue!!! I would be most grateful many thanks
