at 7pm the client sent an email saying "dont bother coming" as our boss demanded 100% payment upfront.... not a deposit or fuel costs or something reasonable.. just 100%.

 

This might not be unreasonable, maybe your boss knows something about the client... I used to run a hire co and this was the only way we would deal with some clients. If you didn't get the money upfront, you spent the next 6 months trying (and sometimes failing) to get it.
