Spock
I will be lighting a production of 'Harlequinade' by Terrence Rattigan in a couple of weeks time. It is set in a provincial theatre in the late 1940s. Can anyone help me as to the gel colors designers would have had available to them at that time? Any help would be appreciated. Thirdtap
I am not totally sure but a theatre in the 1940s might have been lit with gas not electricity. Or possibly used some arc lighting - which will have had a green tint to the lighting.
robloxley
You could try looking down the backs of radiators/ the dimmers etc. for some old bits of cinemoid, but personally I'd not worry too much about colours - how will the audience ever associate a certain gel palette with the 40s??? From the lighting point of view, I'd spend my time trying to get hold of some period lanterns - that'll do more to make it look 'authentic'.
