yamahe suround sound setup

Hi, can someone please tell me how to get my tv to run its sound out through a newly purchased suround sound system.

Do I need to purchase an optical lead and run it straight from the virgin tv box or is there a way using the video lead supplied with the yamaha which they say to plug into the video in on the tv (which I have tried to no availe)
