Real budget USB DMX dongle?

Apart from a 5-pin XLR, what's the difference between an OpenDMX USB dongle, and this?

I'm looking to use it for a bit of experimentation - I certainly won't be entrusting anything critical to it! I'm wondering if it's vaguely plausible that it might work to send DMX before I go and spend the vast amount of £13 to get hold of it.

It's an FTDI into RS485 driver set up, which as I understand it is pretty much the same as the OpenDMX thingamabob - or am I horribly mistaken?

Funnily enough, the manual (linked to from the ebay listing) says 32 devices - so I wonder where the seller got the information from?

Easy - I wrote it! :** laughs out loud **:

USB-RS485

compare my description against the ebay ad.

Ah well, they say imitation is the greatest tribute.
