ekul1978
Hi, ive been given the task of looking into building a very large sandtimer (atleast 1.5m high) for a production about time. I wont have a problem making the frame work but am struggling with thinking of how to do the glass/plastic interior part. My first thought was to use thick perspex and build the interior as more of a square shape, but would like to make it circular if possible. Any help/ideas would be much appreciated. richb
Instinct says to try to get hold of very large glass bottles and join two together, then build frame around. I'm thinking something like a large demijohn. It may also be worth checking garden centres as they often sell very large bottle for use as terraria.Cheaper, but possibly worth investigating if you think you can dress it well...bottles from water coolers. If you try to fabricate anything...good luck! A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on. Beaten to it!
ekul1978
Thanks for the reply richb, im trying to stay away from glass if at all possible. But will check the garden centres out, our local one owes me a favour.
r1ch
Dunno what your budget is, but how about using a couple of spherical fish tanks for the two bulbs? These ones are pretty big and are made of a strong clear plastic: http://www.reef-one.com/biOrb-60 If you could get a couple of clear funnels of the right size to join them together with a bit of dressing you could be all set. peternewman
Does it actually need to be 3D? It just strikes me that one water bottle is heavy enough, let alone having to manhandle two of them. Also the two water bottles wouldn't quite hit your 1.5m. Can you get away with doing something fairly thin, so take a slice out of the middle of the egg timer and make that shape out of plastic, then just add a nice wooden frame around it. You could probably even stick the bulb over the top if you wanted the shape. It might not look too great, but its probably worth experimenting with I'd have thought.
