hey guys just got a new 400mw rgy ilda laser and plan on using it for doing my own shows and projections via ilda.

im completely new to the world of controlling lasers using soft ware and im trying to archive it all as cheaply as possible.

I know laser world have the show editor 10/usb interface package but its 450 euro ex-vat.

is there a cheaper way of doing this and can any interface be used with any soft ware?

Was thinking about getting one of these Chinese USB interface and software packages (£115)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQitemZ

to go with this 150mW green ILDA laser unit (£215 same supplier)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQitemZ370153201662

I know the Chinese gear is prob not going to be up to much but for a first laser?

I'd be happy if

1 It works when asked on a few occassions over Halloween & Christmas

2 It has reasonable good brightness, Green should give max visible light per mW

3 Can scan a few patterns, write some brief text and draw flying witches, Santa sleighs and reindeer

Opinions Welcome!!

I'd only be happy if before ALL of that I was 100% confident the unit was safe and could be used safely within HSE guidelines.

Sadly, many of the cheap units on the market do not fulfill either of those criteria :** laughs out loud **:

ekk have I read this right? you are happy firing a 4.5w laser at a dance floor full of people? Now im no laser expert (far from it avoid it like the plague), but this strikes me as a risky idea?

I would guess that this would be next to impossible if the dancefloor in question was full of people. But I agree, 4.5watts probably presents a significant safety risk. That said, 4.5watts of RGB is likely to be reassuringly expensive enough to have all the required safety equipment installed. Doesn't mean that the operator can't use it hazardously tho...

As laser safety seems to come up regularly, this link to HSG95 might be useful (as it's now been made available for free download by HSE)
