the mac 550's were so spectacularly noisy and the 575's were supposed to be better but they weren't. there is now an upgrade kit for the 575's to improve the noise.

Having used both, I can compare. The MAC 575s where designed to be a smaller version of the 700 but without certain features. I have known different hire companys to complain about the noise and reliability of the 550, but after speaking with a martin rep recently I was assured that the firmware problems that happened early in the 550 range have been solved and they are now reliable products. The 575 may not have the animation wheel, but even an animation wheel in the 550, 700 and certain MAC 2Ks are not used much at all. Having used both I think it is more down to personal choice, price and what is avalible.

Mac 575 krypton is heavier than mac550 for about 8kg, does not have animation wheel and have almost same light output like mac550 so where is the progress???

The Mac 575 Krypton is also heavier than a Mac 2000!!! Making it the heaviest Mac in the range, bar the Mac III...

I has bought four units of mac 575 krypton and they are have great light output,great colors, fast gobo exchange . I have tested Robe 575at and mac 575 krypton and choose Martin. Before I has use Robe 575 xt and their brightness are uncomparable to Martin mac 575 krypton. Now I must buy more 4 units and I have found mac550 for a half price of new mac575krypton because of that I has asked what is with mac550 and are they good units!?

Having just done a 2 week job with a few 550's , with them being on from 9am - 7pm every day for 14 days, constantly running, I found them very reliable. I didn't swap a single fixture out. Found them quite robust, my only nag is that they don't have CMY mixing. But from a reliability point of view I found them brilliant, a good selection of gobos as-well!

Which 2K are you comparing it with JDP? And be fair, alot of the 2ks commonly have an electronic ballast in which makes them lighter sometimes..

<chuckles>

It was a slightly tongue in cheek response, but either way it WAS progress.

There aren't many manufacturers with products which get produced in exactly the same way year on year - otherwise the marketing boys would be out of a job!

I think this statement needs a qualifier at the end, maybe something like: "By me".... The animation wheel is one of my favorites features - I may not use it as the focus, in fact I may have it so out of focus that it is barely noticable, but when I want to imply water, fire, motion etc, nothing can really do it as well as an animation wheel can. Sure, I can rotate a rotating gobo behind a static gobo - love doing that all the time, especially with a blue and clear glass gobo.... but it still feels like a rotating gobo behind a static gobo. Animation wheels feel a lot more infinite. I like them.

What I would really like to see from Martin though is for them to offer the same functionality as a 2k in the 500 region. I think you could end up with a real workhorse of a theatre (and event/concert) light that way - the ability to colour mix and shutter cut from a 575 would be fantastic.

As much as a love the 700's as there a fantastic unit. I think that having a shutter module in them will make them a great player in the market. Im seeing the 700's in theatre alot these days and I think that having this extra feature would make them even more of a player.
