tolley1466
I'm considering upgrading monitors and I've been looking at the DB Technologies multifunctional cabs. But I'm just wondering what would be better in terms of sound and portability, the 10s or 12s? Cheers.
TonyMitchell
I assume you want to use these as stage monitors - in this case IMHO the 12" would be the minimum useful size, lots of artistes prefer 15" wedges, although 12" often suffice, however I can't see anything less than 12" being much use and certainly not rider friendly* *not sure how imporatant this is as you have not specified the proposed usage
tolley1466
It would be for mostly for bands e.t.c
stagemanagement
12" minimum then. 10" isn't going to give you the "oomph" required on a reasonably noisy stage, 15" is going to cover ALL bases.
Rob_Beech
For this range of boxes I'd certainly look at the 12's rather than the 10's. A single 12 will do a reasonable job for general monitoring purposes but I'd prefer to see a pair for louder stuff and lead vocalists etc. A suitable sub may also be required for a drum fill. However, if you are doing a pair per mix on everything then you may find that a pair of 10's does the job better than a single 12. Of course, on the market today there are 10's that will outperform the 12's you speak of so it's important to note we're talking about a specific range of boxes here. 15's? Yes, alot of people request them, simply because they TEND to be louder. But the majority of 15's particularly cheaper ones tend to exceed 30kg per box. Most 12's in pairs will be much clearer, louder and more balanced (due to their physical position) than a single 15. And perhaps only a few kg heavier. johndenim
Agreed Rob. I recently bought a pair of Dynacord am12's, (don't ask, they were s/h from a mates band, hence both are powered) they sound better that the FOH top's I'm using atm. Highly recommended but expensive. The Joker
There is little difference in phsical size of the cabs. We use 12" units and they rarely present a problem with stage footprint - but they do give a better punch than a 10" unit.
tolley1466
Thinking of the 12" cabs. I suppose for smaller show I could also use two for a FOH system. Anybody know of any reliable monitors around the £200/£300 mark that I could compare systems? Regards.
Matt Riley
Yamaha Cm12 (like the sm12 but painted instead of carpet) Link £271 Mackie C300 Link Both are reasonably good speakers. For the price. I thought we got our TXD 12-ms for around that price but alas, I was mistaken! M
Sound In Gloucestershire
are you looking for powered or unpowered? if powered I recommend the Warrior W Audio PSR12A speakers, loud and clear sound and if being used as monitors you can rotate the horn to give the correct dispersion http://www.prolight.co.uk/item.php?hdnID=508010 about £250 a box (inc cover)
cliveybaby
For the price Studiospares auditorium monitors are pretty good 15" 12" heavy boxes but do kick out some and you can get spare parts used them a lot for small budget installs and had nothing but good results Cliveybaby
tolley1466
W Audio's spec looks quite good but so do the studio spares. I'll now have to think about which route I want to take: Passive or Active! Thanks everyone for your input :)
