Bobbsy Posted January 20, 2009 Share Posted January 20, 2009 The two links provided already give a good explanation but there's one slightly pedantic point that I think is worth making: There's no such thing as a balanced cable--instead, what you can have is a cable that carries a balanced signal. The determining factor as to whether the signal is balanced is the electronics feeding the signal to the cable, not the cable itself (assuming the right number and configuration of cores, of course!). I've frequently fed unbalanced signals down the same cables as I use for balanced. It's just a matter of the connectors used and the gear they're plugged into.
