Let's talk GOBO ROTATORS...

I'm looking to buy gobo rotators for my theatre. Specifically for use with Rosco Prismatic & Rosco ImageGlass products for organic breakups and other similar effects. My fixtures are STRAND SL and Source 4 JR (IE: not for the source 4's since they take Size M Gobos...)

Requirements: Must be a dual-rotator with the ability to oppose directions.

Ideals:

Would be nice if it could vary the speeds between the 2 gobos (Something the Vortex360 by Rosco cannot do...).

Would be nice if DMX controllable

Would be nice if affordable (yeah, right...)

Options so far:

Rosco Vortex360 (variable speed, opposing directions £280, no DMX, one motor only)

Rosco Dual Rotator (requires complicated controller, variable speed, opposing directions, 2 motors?)

Chroma-Q Dual Rotator ("Twin FX / Twin FX DMX"... £260 and £340 respectively...)

Gam TWINSPIN ( 2 motors? , expensive though... $645.00... £325 )

Apollo SmartMove (480$... £230. Very much like the Rosco.)

Spinner 2 Dual Motor (looks PERFECT! Anyone used before? Even works on my S4JR's! Price ?)

... and GO!

UPDATE:

Meteor Gobo Rotators:

Dual Rotator (Non-DMX) $469.99 USD

D3 (DMX Rotator, with stand-alone control) $599.99 USD (This month only! Reg. Price $699.99, not as good a price...)

The good thing about the D3 is you can change rotation directions mid-cue by altering the DMX value. The Dual Rotator cannot...

... thoughts?

Does NO one use any rotators? Plenty of views, no replies!

Well, we do!

Used to use the DHA jobbies until we discovered the Apollo Smartmove. Brilliant units!

These are double rotators which can operate under DMX but also stand-alone - which is very useful in event installs where you just want it to run continuously. Nice and reliable too. Not had a problem yet.

One thing - you can't run the gobos at different speeds - its the one motor.

Hope that helps a bit.

The Smart Move rotators by Apollo were developed to cover a wide range of needs for theatre and architectural (museums/theme park) environments. Knowing the stand alone feature may not be needed by all users, it sure comes in handy when a control desk is either a) not needed or, b) not available. We welcome your thoughts and ideas that would improve this family of gobo rotators for the future. Heck- the strength of the English Pound versus the US Dollar should allow most theatres to add several to their stock for the price of a steak dinner! :)

(The dual speed rotator is certainly possible, but bear in mind the addition of a second motor, pcb, and channel requirement. This places the cost higher than the current breed of single motor rotators.)

If you're offering a free steak dinner with every SmartMove, Keith, then I might well be tempted to order some more! :)
