EL has life span 2000 Hrs plus if really gentle with it, less if driven hard, it dims with age so those figures are life to half brightness. Higher frequency means brighter but shorter life. It hates damp, so connections and ends have to be moisture tight. Rough handling will delaminate the phosphor from its core leveing dark patches. Elam were the originators and sponsored a show " Pyromania" I think, which used EL wire extensively, used well the effect is absolutely stunning. Also a small update. I measured the length properly, rather than guessing against my height, and its actually 1.5m long (I've updated this in the OP too).
