Wyvern Theatre Asbestos

On a point of information, your website says white and brown asbestos, not blue. Still nasty though.

That's right. Whilst the white is not so bad, it's still deemed as 'unacceptable' and worthy of their attention!

To be perfectly honest, over-reaction is a common reaction to asbestos - something to do with the CYA mentality of government, be they local or national! There was no real need to condemn HALF of what was binned after our 'outbreak' but it went as a matter of course!!

But could be adviseable to contact my doctor.! But she did say she didnt want to alarm me.
That is precisely what we were advised to do. And most of us did just that. And were told that on the whole, any reasonable chance at contracting asbestosis or other respiratory ailments was extremely unlikely. Those who have done so in the past have worked with the materials for a long time on a regular basis - short term exposure is unlikely to be a problem.

BUT (caveat here) I am NOT a doctor, nor an asbestos expert (though I certainly know more than I did 4 years ago!!). I would recommend that you do indeed see your local GP, if only to play the game and cover YOUR ass!

THEN they dumped the nearly new Strand 300, 5 dimmer racks, (incl 2 new ETC Smart Packs) 2 sound desks, all amps and most sound gear, 2 follow spots and LOADS of other tech gear!!!

Ok I know you said the building was council owned, but if the kit and the theatre stuff was owned by someone else.. then to me what the council did was pretty illegal! You say you managed to get all the kit back after a fight.. Erm surely they shouldn't have put up a fight at all over it!

RE. Wyvern, is there an idea on a date for re-opening or is that still pending?

Ever tried arguing with a local govt authority?

And it also boiled down to the fact that the first thing they accepted liability for was theremoval of the asbestos. And that was handled by a specialist contractor. Who were engaged by the specialists contracted asbestos investigators. Who were the ones that dictated what stayed & what went. If we'd argued more than we did (and we DID argue to a point) about the loss of the gear we may have lost the battle to have the asbestos removal done on the council's dollar... Rock, meet hard place.

Still, much of the kit was replaced on a new for old basis.
