  1. You could go with POE powered IP cameras.

Nice cheap cable, no need to provide separate power up in the bell tower. Maybe a switch at the base of the bell tower, or home runs to your mixer, depends on cable length. You would be limited to 100 metres per segment.

Convert to HDMI down at ground level for your vision mixer.

You may find that having the cameras viewable over the internet will be useful, even if it is just for system checks.

If the cable length is stupidly long, this may not be a solution but otherwise it could work.

  2. Is any thought being given to backup for staff? If you have a large company and covid does take a hold, you could find your entire orchestra, or all your dancers or all your FOH staff are exposed and either have the virus and are off sick, or have to isolate as a precaution. Do you have to run two teams? Or have a few more understudies than usual?
  3. It has similar buttons, faders and general layout to a Celco Series 2 Thirty, but the chaser is different and it didn't have the Blue Borders. Could be a prototype of some kind? (Thus explaining the lack of branding?)

    Where did you find it?

Yes, I thought it lookked a bit Celco ish. Since posting, I have found out more information.

It turns out that one of the circuit boards is marked EFS-Celco, EFS were a desk manufacturer in the early 80's which merged with Celestial Lighting to become Celco in about 1985.

So not exactly a prototype Celco 30 but more like an ancestor I think!

I have a few Celco desks, and stumbled across this recently. I haven't bought it yet, so am relying on photos from the current owner. Apparently it came from a house in Esher, Surrey, possibly built into a wooden console with a sound desk. Not sure where it came from originally!

  4. When I used to be responsible for a large stock of truss, the only way I would consider repairing something like that is to return to the manufacturer (in our case Slick Systems).

We had a good relationship with them, so were happy to accept their opinion whether something was a write off or repairable.

Occasionally we would modify a length that was damaged at one end by having it cut down and reterminated. Obviously thet doesn't apply in this case.

My gut feeling is that that piece is repairable, but for peace of mind, insurance liability etc, I would only consider getting the manufacturer or their authorised representative to look at it.

  5. I had a look at something similar for some PAR56 cans. I could find drop in replacements for conventional par lamps, designed for swimming pool lights, which were available in white or RGB. They were hideously expensive though!

I converted some fresnels using some par 38 RGB lamps sitting behind the lens, bit of simple bracketry from some aluminium and a few rivets. on a par you could put a diffuser of some sort in front to the lamp. You wouldn't get much usable light out of it but it would glow nicely.

  6. Hi Folks, I'm looking at purchasing a touchscreen to run a small laptop setup to run either Titan 1 or Chamsys software. Looking at the many different options available, it all looks a bit confusing to me. Does anyone have any current product recommendations? The last thread I could find on the subject was from 2012 so I'm guessing things have moved on somewhat since then.

    Thanks in advance, Sam

I've just bought a Dell 24 Touch Monitor: P2418HT, for exactly this purpose, to replace a venerable IIyama touchscreen. It was recommended on a Jands Vista forum.

I have to say I'm very impressed, it's multi touch capable and very responsive. Plug and play on a windows 10 PC.

Lists about £300, but shopping around I think I paid about £240.

  7.

I guess depends how much you want to do and spend. Is a massive press hit better than waiting for a show ?

The motorshow we had stuff at. Ready to go and they pulled it. It seems like there is still quite a bit going on, they did a bunch of press junkets and demos, I guess a day or so. But our one was a massive stand, big show off. They needed to do something, doing nothing would have been worse.

I was in Geneva for Motorshow. Our end client had already issued a ban on travel for their staff and executives to Geneva before the show was cancelled and when it was cancelled we had to hold until client decided if they would do some sort of press event either at Palexpo or another venue. In the end we started the get out the next day and I came home 2 weeks early!

As someone else said to me recently, corporates are risk assesing potential litigation, not risk assesing potential infection.

  8. Have you tried reversing the DMX polarity? I seem to recall that some of these Soundlab units had the positive/negative DMX connections wired the opposite way around.

I've had a few of these Soundlab dimmers, I think there are different versions, older ones tend to have pins 2 and 3 of the 3 pin DMX cable reversed. I don't have one to hand at the moment, but pretty sure the pinout is printed on the side of the dimmer. Worth checking!

However, I'm not 100% certain. but from memory, the red LED flashes when they are receiving DMX, and is solid when it isn't. This suggests you are receiving DMX!

  9. Hi Hive Mind,

I'm looking for a way to make as many 15amp pendant bulb fixtures as possible on a budget of £250. Need to source everything; plugs, wiring, socket and bulb so that they can be patched into a 15amp dimmer rack.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Ollie

Give Marklew Productions in Birmingham a call (or they are on Blue Room). They did a job recently with loads of pendants, which they made up. They might be able to do you a hire or sale deal.

  10. I am assuming at this stage that 6.3A 640V is the same, and that, as it's on a lamp circuit it wil be quick blow.

Probably best stick to 250v, not 640v!

The hard to read letter is almost certainly an F, options are FF,F,M,T,TT

    F - Fast Acting

    6.3A - 6.3 Amps

    L - Low breaking capacity

    250V - 250 volts

  11. Anyone know anything about Miltel gobos - I keep coming across them in boxes of old gobos and wondered who they were and what happened to them. Some of the designs are really interesting, but I've not seen them elsewhere so I don't think the range got bought by another company. Some of them are octagonal shaped, rather than the usual circular.

    Thanks

    Martin

I'm pretty sure they got purchased/taken over by Rosco. I know I've seen some Miltel designs in their catalogue.

  12. I'm surprised anything can be rigged from those at all. Odd that they're not stood further away from the balcony front.

I think the photo must be deceptive.

There is plenty of room to hang a minuette fresnel or an RGB Par. I've hung Source 4 pars there too, they don't touch the front face of the balcony.

  13.

    Thanks for that.

I did a search on CPC for Scapa tape which didn't show any results so I missed the one in your link.

Are you saying that all the Pro Power tapes are made by Scapa?

    Cheers

    Gerry

Not sure if all the Pro Power tape is Scapa, but any with a 4 digit reference number in the description probably is as this is how Scapa refer to their various tapes.

  14. Just finished my stock of black gaffer tape.

It was made by Scapa and bought from CPC.

They don't seem to list it anymore.

I like it because it's easy to tear, sticks well and easy to pull up without leaving any sticky residue.

Any recommendations for a similar tape, preferably from CPC as they will deliver to me here in Spain at a sensible price.

    Cheers

    Gerry

Are you sure CPC don't still do it but under their Pro Power brand?

For instance Waterproof Matt Gaffer Tape 50mm x 50m Black - 3130 BLACK is actually Scapa 3130, the picture is even of a roll of Scapa tape.

  15. I've done a few gigs in a similar venue in Wales. Concerts, not theatre. It's not as big, but is a similar format of balcony. Have a look at these pictures, which show how they mounted bars along the balcony front. I think this is also grade 2 listed so the bars are in effect temporary.

The rig is something like 3 x 500w fresnels per side, and 3 x RGB pars per side with a couple more on the front balcony. This is adequate to give a good stage cover from the fresnels and colour from the Pars. When I go in there, if I need more, I can rig from their bars and run a 3 channel dimmer from the 13A sockets on the balcony or I can put a couple of stands in the balcony seating, though this obviously reduces seating capacity upstairs.
