  1. Some people detest them, but a Behringer LC2412 does provide 12 channels of 0-10V analogue out on a 15 pin D connector.

Useless for the OP as a) he needs PLUS 10v for his racks and b) his budget is around £20 so unless he can get a second hand desk for that.............

  2. Some while ago we removed our 24 ch Permus rack (was new circa 1990) and dismantled it as there was someone on the BR who needed some spares... However I unfortunately got sidetracked (ie had a fall, broke my ankle & wrist) and never got round to picking up again...

Anyways, we still have the box load of bits which are available should anyone want to make an offer.

I know that 2 or 3 of the units were dead, BUT we do also have a handful of spare thyristors that never got fitted before we decided to swap the box for a Chilli rack. So if you did take some on and find a faulty one I can send over a free thyristor as a repair option :)

If anyone is interested drop me a PM and we can talk turkey. I reckon we'd say £25 per piece plus any carriage. Discounts if you want more.

And if anyone wants the empty Permus housing that's available but will be scrapped very soon.

    ***UPDATE***

NOTE that there are some Permus parts that will also fit Tempus portable racks - enquire for details.

  3. I've got to say that I'm getting a little worn down by these things.

The clap for NHS workers was a great idea to start but is now getting a bit tedious. And from those I know who work IN the NHS they're getting peed off by those who clap on a Thursday then get out into parks and back gardens and streets and party-down at the weekend.

And as has been said in another post, the idea of lighting up buildings is getting old.

I think the hospital staffs and keyworkers and teachers etc KNOW that they have public support - nothing that anyone does will help them one jot in this way.

I know nurses and doctors, I'm married to and know many teachers, I even count the guy who runs the council's bin lorries as a mate. All most of them want is to get on with the job, and if someone sends them a personal message or a small gift to the wards, or some such that means heaps more than people clattering pans or lighting a bridge or building blue...

    Rant over

  4. I'm looking at OBS / Teams(Zoom) to do a school open event. However, Zoom can't get the audio from OBS. ...........

That was my major problem to start with but between us we managed to fix it.

If you use the virtual OBS virtual cam option (you may need to download a plugin ) but what I ended up finding was that the sound from audio/video clips is going into Zoom over the mic channel.

It did take a LOT of fiddling with settings, including making sure you have the individual sources set to monitor and output, so not 100% sure which bit we changed to get it working but it IS feasible. :P

  5. I have literaly been setting OBS up to run thru Zoom for a quiz that should take place in a couple of weeks. Completely new to both it's been a bit of a learning experience (but in NO way am I expert) but I have made it do what I want. Just :)

What I'm doing is setting up a collection of scene groups for each of the 8 quiz round - I think the limit is 24 scenes per group

Each of those scenes can be a variety of sources, from audio files, video files, web cam, external cam (I think) as well as pictures and web URLs displaying live web pages (I'm using a Google Sheet updated by my missus on another machine to keep score).

If you feed the web cam etc into OBS and then take the video/audio from that like everything else to Zoom that seems to be the best solution.

There are loads of settings in both that can trip you up but persevere and you should get what you need.

However, don't hold your breath on getting back to work any time soon. My guess is that this phased return to any sense of normal is going to be longer than many think.

  6. I've got it running at the moment through OBS into Teams conference calls. It has sliders as to the level of suppression it does.

My wife's a singer (Alto) so I might ask her to try it at various levels of suppression and see what it does to her voice. She won't be the top, top end but she can hit that top E in Phantom if I put enough vodka in her....

Would be interesting - though need to know if it's feasible to run either as an insert via the output of a desk & back in to feed a PA.....
  7. The twitter compression probably doesn't help but it sounds horribly processed to me. Great for comms but I wouldn't want to hear a performer through it.

That is precisely why I'm cautious. Obviously we have no way of knowing what gear he's putting it through and as you say what is Twitter doing overall, but if it's worth exploring I will. If it's not, well.... :P

  8. Right - noise is NOT my strongest discipline, as I've said before on here, but as the guy who has to sell stuff to committee I need to get an understanding of things before I try. :)

One of the techs here has pointed me at a Twitter post from a chap who's using a sound card with RTS technology to filter out extraneous noise.

    Here's the link - https://mobile.twitter.com/thegunrun/status/1252789873699745792?s=21&fbclid=IwAR12fsvKlruNLhBHnxJQwIRiBp4Aa5-ATZAlHo8va32zj9GaIMYPQy70VsE

In the short vid, he's got a fan pointed at his face and taps a rubber mallet on the desk, neither of which can be heard with the filtering on. If he disables that, you can definitely hear both.

As expected, when he re-enables the filtering there's a definite 'squashing' of the verbal bandwidth because obviously those sounds have to 'go' somewhere.

The question, however, is whether this is something that may have a valid use for live show sound, or if it in fact already IS a facility in some rigs/desks...?

It does strike me as a potential aid to mic feedback perhaps, but not quite sure...

    So - go!!

  9. As another not hinge answer, I've always found lift out lids to be more flexible for traps. It allows you to cut replacement lids with a cutout that suits, and still keep a full set of uncut lids. It also allows for cable exits on either side, whereas hinges allow exits only on 1 side or in the middle of the trough.

Hinges invariably fill up with fluff/paint and become a pain too.

This isn't a permanent item - it's for the catchment trough for the rain effect in Singin' In the rain.

Need to fold the trap lids up and flat to expose the trough then cover again for act 2.

And counter hinges was the (very simple) name I was looking for :)

    Cheers

  10. What's the name of the hinges that can be used in flooring/traps on stage that can be chased into the flooring surface * and the trap door so that they're flat to the floor etc but can fold all the way back on themselves 180 degrees but at the same time do NOT have the raised hinge / pin proud of the floor as a standard hinge would...

I need to put a full width trough across the prosc without creating stumble hazards for dancers crossing the prosc line onto the thrust.

So - what are the darned things called?

  11. I'm guessing that there will be HUGE numbers fighting over holidays in August to make up for those missed during this crisis...

What makes you think we won't still be in lockdown in August?

    Who knows..... (I certainly don't)

  12. Closed the doors on my 250 seat community venue on Monday after the PM's broadcast - that was painful, despite being necessary.

And whilst it's a very successful volunteer run space, and most of us have day jobs that will continue (I've been a BT homeworker for 17 years, so not a lot of change for me there!) it's still going to be a huge struggle.

The next show on stage would have been the annual gang show - they had a full rehearsal on Sunday then get kicked by the closure a day later :( (And the fact that the Scout Association apparently e-mailed them all with their edict that they highly recommended cessation of ALL group activities).

We have had a really busy season drop-kicked into touch. Some of them may be able to reschedule over the summer - we close for maintenance and refurbs mid July til September) but that's only if their casts (and audiences) are able to cater for it - I'm guessing that there will be HUGE numbers fighting over holidays in August to make up for those missed during this crisis...

  13. On the whole, in my experience, DJs tend to mostly have their own gear. So unless you want to look at the option of short notice hire for bits that they've lost or had damaged, I can't see much of a market...
  14. So my usual hire guy has come up blank for the hire of what I'd needed for a show next weekend, needed a 10,000 lum machine minimum

He'd previously been able to get a 12k proj for around £400 but the closest he can find amongst his (midlands) contacts is 3 times that which is way over budget.

Anyone have any hire co's that could do one for me at short notice?

    Cheers

  15. Just looking at the Prolight ones now - and they certainly look like they'll do the job.

Just looking at the Prolight ones now - and they certainly look like they'll do the job.

And I've gone for their 30kg clamps - we don't have anything near that weight in house stock so those look a marvelous choice - thanks all.

  16. Looking around at the moment for a box of new trigger clamps - these on CPC

Quite a few options on the market - CPC has them for £18.98 plus vat and a couple of places I've found do them at cheaper plus delivery (which puts those in the same ball-park as CPC).

Anyone got any contacts for these at a fair but lower price before I take the plunge?

Probably looking for 15 or so.

  17. Hi,

I have a question/issue the venue I am in has a visiting company in. I have found out( no risk assessmentswere given) that it is domestic confetti both in hand held cannons and manually thrown which is not flame proofed. I have raised this issue and have been told that it is fine as long as we clear it up properly. I am not comfortable with this " risk assessment" and feel I am getting no back up on this . It is used at the end of the show while the rig is at full. Am I overreacting or not?

Who has told you that 'it will be ok'...?

If it was the visiting company then that's worth nothing in the grand scheme - if you (or whoever is the responsible authority for the venue if it's not you) say that it's NOT acceptable, then they, the visitors, will have to abide by that ruling.

However, if the venue manager is the one saying that it's OK, and they've looked at how the confetti is being used (and done their own dynamic RA) then you would have to step back.

If you're still unhappy with that situation then you have options - appeal to the venue management or if they remain unconcerned then you can walk away if you don't wish to be associated with something you feel is an unmitigated risk.

  18. The answer can depend on whether you want a dedicated lantern to hit the mirror ball or if you can work a mover into the mix to hit it as needed.

The much higher power in a tight focussed mover is my preferred option when designing shows that want the MB effect and the most recent choices have been Mac Quantum (LED) profile that can depend on whether your design will allow a close enough hanging point to cater for the 12 degree minimum beam on the Quantum without too mush wall splash behind the ball. Or whilst not being LED, the still low-ish power Robe Pointe (insert whatever beam light you can get hold of) that one blows an ACL well out of the water when it comes to MB effect. And with the much tighter beam angle can do the job from quite some distance. :)

  19. It might also be equable with the film world - well, maybe NOT the modern movie sets where so many epic 'stunts' seem to be green-screened and CGI, but certainly those of not that many decades ago.

Movie stunt men (and women/children) were renowned for their apparent lack-lustre approach to safety yet were probably amongst the safest on any film set. Simply because they rehearsed their moves ahead of the shoot days so that when it came to cameras rolling they'd got it off-pat without any foreseeable errors. Maybe not quite the rigorous practice that circus-folk go through but the principle is still there.

Make the mistakes in a safe (er) environment so that when it matters, all goes according to plan.

  20. On a slightly less larcenous level, in some venues they have an irritating habit of wandering away from the stage and propping doors open all over the place.

    Certainly do. :(

I often have to search our building for those that have 'walked' this way.
