  1. As you are looking to assemble this from pre made units there are fixtures out there that are more akin to the laser emulation that was the original idea behind the Floyd Droid. The ADJ Ricochet being one example

    Both employ a pair of mirrors per beam to create the fast scanning effects. This will obviously push your budget but you will achieve the effect you seek, where as the units you have in mind don't even colour mix, you only get beams of unmixed red, green, blue and white blobs.

     

    Control wise the easy way to program effects like these is with a desk that does the work for you, something with an inbuilt effects generator. But again that's going to be more expensive

  2. As good as the Chamsys offering is on pc, I couldn't live without real faders. Though the wing setups I've owned (both pc wing and maxi wing) have been great for fly shows, for a venue I'd go hardware over wing and computer every time. Too much chance of the laptop being used for other things, not a one box system.

     

    The MQ 40 and MQ 60 are identical in size. Compared to a Quartz they are slightly wider, but not enough for complaint. You might be thinking of the MQ 80 which is more comfortable to operate with it's larger touch screen, but the size increase really isn't that huge. Having used the quick q 20 I would personally pick an MQ 60 over the quick q, but that may be my familiarity with the desk, and the ability to customise the way the desk works to suit my preferences, one of the strongest aspects of the MQ range IMHO.

     

    I would throw the Hedgehog 4 in here as an option, a very powerful small desk that fits your requirements of 2 universes and a touch screen built in, a couple of AV companies I freelance for have them as their mid size desk and they work well for them. I can't comment on their price, but I hear there are deals to be had.

     

    I'd be happy walking into a Quartz, Hedgehog or an MQ 60 in a venue, and would know I could easily get a show out of any of them. I could say the same for the Quick Q, the FLX, the colorsource AV, smartfade ML, and other older desks in the 2 universe and a bunch of faders category, but would need a little time to remember syntax and idiosyncrasies. Who is going to be using the desk? House crew only or touring crew?

    My local bp garage even has an atomic in white built into the roof above the tills, to further disorientate the assailants.

     

    You can get units rated for continuous output, such as the zr44, but they are obviously more expensive, but worthwhile in the long run, as they tend to outlast cheaper units, by at least the price ratio.

  5. The quick q doesn’t do command line programming. The physical desks do not have a number pad, selection of fixtures / channels is from the touchscreen. From the patch window you can swipe left and right in the bar with the boxes that represent channels, but from there you need to build them into a layout on the screen. You can then select channels from the touchscreen.

     

    If you want command line style programming you will need a magic q desk, not a quick q

  6. Bubbles are generally cheaper and easier to replace than ballasts / power supplies.

    In rock and roll it’s not uncommon to have socca as : hot, dim, mixed hot/dim, motor power, motor control, mixed motor power/control (several standards) even noise boys use it for speaker runs. The potential for damage to equipment is much worse than feeding movers from dimmers, but the risk is mitigated by proper labelling and having and following plans. Personally I use a band of earth tape on socca ends to signify motor socca, a widely used technique.

    When doing mixed hot / dim soccas on a patchable rack (such as an art 2k) I try to simplify the plug up, eg. Only using ways 5 & 6 on every socca as hot power. Even on a rushed corporate load in this can help avoid sending dimmed mains to fixtures, especially if you power up hot first to check your rig as mentioned above.

  7. And 10m of truss of any sort is going to need at LEAST 3 pickups to support its own weight even without anything on there

     

    There are plenty of trusses available that can easily cope with a 10m span, just supported at the ends, and still have capacity for load. A type, litec QL52, JTE supertruss, prolyte s52, total fabs OV40..... Consult the manufacturers load tables.

    Granted the generic stuff off eBay probably wouldn’t fall into this list, but your statement above is incorrect. I’m not commenting on the situation the OP is in, just the statement about truss.

  8. Projectionists and video engineers in particular are a breed that are suffering from the same issue as “mechanics” becoming “fitters”. I remember the precise nature of lining up banks of 2050’s with offset lenses and gemini or dove dissolve units, and barco 801’s and the like. Nowadays you don’t have to worry so much about the geometry, just over scan and warp the corners in with the corner keystone correction.
