  1. Altman have a Micro Ellipse - a few years ago we needed something similar a couple of months before the S4 Mini was available in this country, so we bought these. They were OK, though I wouldn't rave about them. White Light was the supplier at that time. We wanted the MR16 lamps, but I believe an LED version is / was available. They were a bit cheaper than the S4 turned out to be when they arrived here, Is it for a long-running thing? if not, then SLX did me a reasonable price on hiring 10 S4 Minis for a recent project, I'm sure there are other companies that could offer them as well....

He described Victoria Beckham as the strongest member of the group. Posh! Should have rung at least a little irony bell. (I mean, I'm sure there are some big Ringo fans out there, but if someone told you 'Octopus's Garden' is the best thing in the Beatles' catalogue you would have to at least suspect they're taking the piss.) No names, no packdrill! B-)

I was being somewhat ironic, not blaming the singers... but it is by all accounts a very tricky venue, possibly not the best place to start with all the added pressures of first shows... Ah gotcha, I missed the irony! Almost seems like there should be “local experts” at these tricky venues, maybe with an obscure PA, weird placement etc to really get the best out of it. Then just have a touring FOH package. Maybe there is, just seems strange to think you can tour a PA that size and hope it works everywhere. I've often thought we need an irony emoticon - the irony being there may well be one, but I haven't recognised it! I am reminded of the PA at the Minack Theatre - a mixture of odd bits and pieces, rusty and sea-stained, but it works - every seat can hear.

Possible factor, gig was in Croke Park, a football Stadium notorious (as I understand) for tricky sound. Doubtless not helped by the strongest member of the band deciding not to join the tour...
  6. I think the Appeal Judge accepted / agreed that wearing hearing protection at all times was not practical, but upheld the original judgement against the ROH on other, narrower grounds. I saw an article that explained this, but I can't just now put my hands on it.... I'll keep looking.
  7. Or people should be kept more than 128m away from the sound source
  8. Strikes me that anticipating a sound level of 150dB in a relatively small room (as far as theatre spaces go) turns the room into a hearing protection zone. This in my view indicates against the use of live pyro on stage.
  9. that certainly won't work, although it is possible to make things look black depending on what colour light you shine at it, for example in theory a yellow object will look black if only blue light hits it...but not with multi-coloured things, as each individual coloured object will respond differently to the colour of the light shone it it. hence the need for collaboration with set and costume designer, and maybe a physics lesson for the director.
  10. Likewise, plus "on cue everything on stage turns to black and white" Did one show with the drabbest grey set ever, the cast in black and white costume and using sepia gel for one scene. Didn't quite do what you need but depressed the hell out of the audience. Perfecto! I once worked on a show based on the movies of a well known director whose career in the cinema ran from the 1920s to the 1970s - first half was in black and white, the second half was glorious technicolour. black and white is perfectly possible on stage. Needs a bit of coordination / collaboration between set, costume and lighting designers.
  11. Which should mean you can also trigger it over a macro, such that for example running your first cue for preset could disable RDM. Yup. Also macros can quickly turn it on and off if needed for a quick check, same as is often done to toggle MSC, timecode, OSC etc. and via buttons on magic sheets, too. All we need now is a way to change the clock...I can't be the only one who always notices that it's wrong after going into preset and the house opening...! wear a watch! ;)
  12. don't mean to hi-jack a serious and useful thread, but that German cathedral sounds like it might be a bit dry, Durham Cathedral has an 18 second RT... On a more serious note, I'd be interested to know how touring orchestras manage their testing regimes and mitigation - they are going to be playing in halls that can vary significantly in loudness and reverberation.
  13. it depends on the location. Somehow, lager tastes OK out of bottles in foreign countries like Spain or Mexico... I occasionally make the mistake of thinking it will taste like that back in the UK...
  14. history is (re) written by the victors....at least the tories would like to think so, I guess
