GC1971
Morning allIf you get sent out on a gig with a brand new Genny and you ask the pa Co whether it's been tested and are told yes but check it to be sure as you're an old skeptic to find there is an earth fault.. when you call said pa Co and are told to just get on with it who's liable if it all goes Pete tong? GC1971
I didn't get time to investigate but my Martindale came up warbling earth fault. - different potential to neutral? -not connected at all?
Brian
-not connected at all?Could be. On smaller gennies the earth isn't always connected to the Neutral.
pete10uk
I would say that depends on if your qualified or competent to make the diagnosis of a fault. If you are and you diagnose a fault and use the equipment anyway and the said DJ crops up, then I would say (as part of a court jury if need's be) you are equally if not wholly responsible, but if like my self you have a basic knowledge and question the your suspisions and are tole everything is fine by a qualified / competent person (not the receptionist) then I couldn't hold you responsible. I know genies can be wired and are not dry cut so I would never be confident in arguing technical specifications with the engineer who fitted it. Like all H&S matters I apply the sleep test, if I can get off to sleep safe in the knowledge that nothing can go wrong or if it did, I'm covered and I can prove it, then theres nothing to worry about. It all comes down to using the right people for the job, if the Generator suppliers are a reputable company then chances are it is fine, it is good you have raised your concerns but if they haven't explained why your meter is giving funny readings and your convinced there is a fault can you really get off to sleep tonight? I couldn't.
GC1971
Hmm. Good point. The Gennys were bought and not hired and the person I raised my concern is the owner who's only worry was whether I was getting a belt or not.I really wish I knew more about generator electrics. I knew that neutral and pe aren't always connected but thought that an earth fault would be some sort of difference between either the rod and the case/earth output or neutral and should be investigated in either instance.Maybe I ought to pop along to the power forum.
