DPA - Terminate 3.5 Jack

In a DPA kit box you normally get a MicroDot to 3.5mm adaptor or MicroDot to XLR if you request one.

Did you buy the microphone or hire it?

Most hire/sales Co's will have them.

Thanks for for reply.

I have had the mics for some time now, so I only have the mics. Is there a way of soldering them to 3.5 safely?

Canford do them - http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/74-127_DPA-DAD6007-ADAPTER-MicroDot-microphone-connector-to-AKG-PT301 - but at £63+VAT each, I don't think I'd be rushing out to get them!

They are also not impossible to break. If the mic is seeing vigorous use, the microdot adaptors might be more of an ongoing expense than a one-off purchase.

They do still have the microdot, but very expensive for 25 mics... Is soldering an option?

It's probably important to know what pack you are wanting to connect them to as well, some packs require different wiring.

Some of the more helpful manufacturers even include a wiring diagram in the manual for their bodypacks which I'm sure you could cross reference with information from the DPA data sheet about what the mic requires in terms of bias power etc.

Assuming that you are wiring to 3.5mm jack for Sennheiser then it is a very simple operation to cut the microdot connector off and re-terminate the cable to a 3.5mm jack.

The DPA's are very simple as they only have 1 conductor plus screen inside the cable (unlike MKE2'S)

You connect the screen to the screen tab on the 3.5mm jack and the conductor to the Tip of the 3.5mm.

Be sure to use hellerman sleeves or similar to provide adequate strain relief on the cable as it sits inside the strain relief of the 3.5mm jack. I normally also loop the cable over and provide additional strain relief by heatshrinking the cable to the body of the jack.

I have never bothered to purchase the Microdot adaptors; far too expensive and increase the length of the termination giving more weaknesses for failure to occur.

Hi,

Could anyone please tell me how to terminate a DPA 4060. I am trying to connect them to 3.5mm jacks.

Thanks!

I presume its sennheiser evolution your trying to use....if so

theres your connectors. If your good at soldering, they're pretty handy to do. They work just fine if you cut off the microdot and terminate the cable onto one of these. The only thing is id advise to use some heat shrink as strain relief as these connectors have none. Will save you a few quid tho. The trick with soldering them is to....

- Get a good iron (Antex 25W is what I'd use)

- Tin the cores of the cable before you attempt to solder them to the connector.

- Use as little time on the actual solder points as you can

- Heat shrink for relief....

you only need to solder the centre pin & shield. the ring you can leave out.

or you can use these connectors which are a bit more expensive and tend to melt more quickly than the canford but have better strain relief

or last but not least....these seem to be very good also.

hope this helps
