cedd
Big day today! My Prusa i3 mk2 printer is assembled, calibrated and printing like a dream. The hope is in the future (particularly with baby on the way) that I can sit and fiddle at my laptop building my prop projects (or at least complicated parts of them) rather than being out in the garage all night. I've printed some of the classic first prints, and have also just done a 1:25 model of a steeldeck that I found online (seemed like a nice delicate test piece, and my friend has a 1:25 model of our theatre too). The question is, what next? Anybody out there already printing and got any useful prints they've done and would be willing to share? First big project is a loudspeaker alignment tool that allows a laser pen to be mounted easily to the top of a speaker to aid alignment. I might even be persuaded to do a run of these. It's actually already designed but I want to cut the amount of filament involved a bit first. Any suggestions? Anything you've always thought would be useful? I'm already a bit addicted. I'm going through filament like nobody's business! And for anybody looking for a printer, I can't recommend the Prusa highly enough! What a piece of kit! ninjadingle
I liked the idea Dave Ratt had about printing customised fader "knobs" - he designed a knob that held 2 faders of a graphic equalizer together vertically, so that when you adjusted one the other one followed. Could be applied horizontally for using stereo on mono channels on a mixer?
cedd
Aha yes, I remember seeing them! I'd wondered about doing some coloured fader caps that fitted snugly over my faders so I could easily identify certain channels (I don't have the joy of digital scribble strips or fader glow). I'm also thinking about doing some custom blanking plates for Neutrik cutouts - so that I can mount BNC's, jacks etc. I also have need for a VGA socket in one of my new racks so I'll probably have a go at doing one of them in a cutout too. Some nice labelling plates to number my radio mic outputs might be a nice touch.
Stuart91
Could be applied horizontally for using stereo on mono channels on a mixer? Canford used to offer something like that - a clear plastic cover that slid over certain fader caps and ganged them together. I think it was mainly for broadcast desk, and was typically expensive. musht
depends on your flavour of nostalgia guess ;-) Darth Fader http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:118433 or Pac Man http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:547342 Wanhao i3 clone has churned many of these useful things out http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1320948
Roderick
You have entered the zone where everything you see is divided into 'I can print that' or 'How could I print that'.
Jivemaster
A friend with printer used an ammo box with a splash of acetone inside as a smoothing chamber, just let a moulding sit in acetone vapour and it gets smoother and glossier. Trouble now is that acetone is not retail now.
Shez
Isn't that what nail varnish remover is?
musht
Acetone only works on ABS which is trickier and smellier to print than PLA Nail varnish remover tends to be very watered down with mebbe a hint of detergent, pure acetone easy to find http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-LITRE-ACETONE-5000ML-5L-NAIL-VARNISH-REMOVER-CLEANER-SOLVENT-/192094685297
paulears
Seems to be the business to be in AndrewR one of our old members gave up all our activities, left theatre behind and took the thing he designed in a dressing room in Belfast (that drove everyone mad) moved to California, opened a factory and set up Type A machines, has a sun tan and an open top sports car. Jealous? me?

MarkPAman
Is it strong enough for thread adaptors? M10 > 3/8" or 5/8" for putting mic clips on lighting bars is always useful.
gyro_gearloose
You can still buy Acetone. I bought a litre of it last year from a chemical company that I found on ebay, of all places.
cedd
Well I reckon the printer has already saved me a quarter of what it cost me. Building a new playback rack with a pair of mac minis and some audio interfaces. Rackmount for a pair of mac minis with levers to allow you to operate the power button from the front is around £180. Just printed a full pair of brackets with the switch mechanism and I reckon including the 1u shelf it'll have cost me £30. Super posh, angle adjustable, laser speaker aligner on the way next.....
