Totally agree with everything here, the only other bit of advice I've learnt is that kids tend to quieten down and become quite self conscious when they can hear themselves, or think they're being amplified. Hide the mics as much as possible, no onstage foldback for the mics and tell them there are no mics, or they're broken / switched off....

Good point! But I think exactly the same happens with adults in my experience!

I use headworn mic's for a Year 6 (10/11 yr olds) in the school I work in, and explain the fact that I need as much volume as they can give me using maths - 10 x 10 is 100, 0 x 10 is still 0! Give me nothing, I can't amplify it. I do try and get them on them for at least 1 rehearsal before the dress, and teach them not to fiddle with them - they are usually pretty good.

Apart from the ones (usually boys) who get right up close to the mic & shout (but then some adults are like that too )
