Do ethernet switches need optical isolation?

" A typical switch might put itself into sleep mode when no traffic is observed, but the XES-8G stays ready to forward data anytime without a delay."

Is this an unusual feature or just marketing twaddle?

Twaddle. They are talking about Energy Efficient Ethernet which is a fairly recent feature of some switches which can do this. However all the switches I've seen with the feature turn it off by default.

Consider the go to switch for Dante is a cheap Cisco SG300 series thing and that has far greater demands on the network than most lighting rigs. Also note that Audinate specifically tell you to have Energy Efficient Ethernet disabled for Dante.

Definitely twaddle. I've never even the simplest network of modern equipment fall idle for a significant amount of time. There's always some traffic from somewhere in the stack.

We've had a buggy netgear switch where the power saving wouldn't switch off, even though the UI said it was.

Soundweb remotes definitely don't like it, and caused all sorts of "interesting" issues.
