JOB DESCRIPTION

Role: DRAMA TECHNICIAN – PART TIME 3 DAYS PER WEEK

Salary range between £15,500 and £17,500 depending on experience

Reporting to: Head of Drama and Dance

Hours: 8.00 am – 6pm for 3 days

Term Time plus INSET days, 7+ assessment days and the full production week (over-time paid) at the end of each term including extended hours (over-time paid) for the Get-In. (NB No holidays to be taken during term time)

 

Role: To assist the Head of Drama and Dance in running a busy and friendly department and to support them in providing a creative learning environment for our pupils. The technician will help in the running of a number of productions, Drama classes and performances throughout the year, and with other school events that have a performance aspect to them.

 

Key Tasks:

Drama and Dance Teaching assistant

• To support the Head of Drama and Dance in their work in the classroom in delivering the curriculum to the pupils, and with the general administration of the department (creating classroom displays, classroom organisation, ordering of stocks and resources for the department, assisting the Head of Drama and Dance with managing the various department budgets).

• To assist in the day-to-day running of the school (break-time and lunch-time duties, general behaviour management expectations).

Design / Productions

• In liaison with the Head of Drama, arrange (either by delegation and management, or by undertaking tasks directly) design and technical aspects for School / Drama productions including:

• set/staging; props; basic costume design and construction; hiring in, rigging and programming of basic lighting, and/or audio visual equipment; stage management; and any other tasks required for the production.

Maintenance

• Monitor and maintain stock items (lamps, gels, gobos, tape, screws, timber, etc.) and all stores and general day-to-day equipment as needed.

 

Health and Safety

• Maintain a safe, clean and tidy work space at all times.

Please note all Technicians are required to undertake First Aid training.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, be able to manage their own time and work efficiently and effectively. The candidate will have technical and design skills, a creative background, and up-to-date knowledge of theatre systems and ICT. The candidate will be able to use their own initiative and will be able to work independently and flexibly.

The candidate will also need to be trained in manual handling and working at height.

 

Key Requirements

• Experience working with young people in theatre, either professionally or in a school, is desirable.

• Knowledge and experience of live performance and events.

• Working knowledge of IT including, word, excel and publisher

• Basic knowledge of lighting systems, lighting control apparatus, lighting equipment and its maintenance,

• Design, building and crewing experience in most aspects of performing arts.

• Knowledge of costumes and properties, their construction and application in the theatre.

• Knowledge of set building, painting and design techniques and their application.

• Knowledge of theatre scenery, safe rigging and staging equipment.

• Basic knowledge of electrical principals and electrical safety.

• Knowledge of current Health & Safety requirements and legislation regarding theatre.
