I work at a University where we loan out Panasonic HC-V500 camcorders to students and staff. I need to replace a few but Panasonic don't manufacture them anymore. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations of camcorders with similar specs? Cheers.

The cheapest thing with the same size sensor and OIS is:

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/camcorders/hd-camcorders/hc-v180eb-k.html

That's very plasticity and does most control via the touch screen. It has a manual lens cap rather than a motorised one if that is important to you.

Going up to the next level in terms of

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/camcorders/hd-camcorders/hc-w580eb-k.html

doesn't buy you much you get a few more ports and a wifi but no better sensor or lens.

Going to

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/camcorders/hd-camcorders/hc-v770.html

gets you a much bigger sensor and some more physical controls on the camera but no leica lens yet. I think it might have a motorised lens cap. Then

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/camcorders/hd-camcorders/hc-vx870.html

Gives you a Leica lens and 4K, which is utterly worthless in a camera like this.

Next is

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/camcorders/hd-camcorders/hc-vx980eb-k.html

which I think just gives you a some software tweaks and maybe a cold shoe on top of the camera.

I was looking to buy a 'cheap' video camera but looked at the range and how horrible the consumer things are and decided it just wasn't worth it so I'm saving my pennies for a professional camera system.

Thank you for your reply. We've gone with the 180s. They seem to be pretty similar and do everything we need from them. They're not used for anything particularly fancy so hopefully they'll be fine!
