paulears
Story here Looks like Harman have lost interest in AKG and 17 of the designers are seating a new company after their Austrian base has closed. It seems that Samsung now own Harman, who own loads of companies, and they're not really interested in pro audio any longer.
Judge
Saw this coming. Samsung were only after one thing from that acquisition - the Harman auto audio stuff. They will not care about anything else and are completely ruthless so expect to see more news like this.
timsabre
They own a lot of the big industry manufacturers... JBL, Crown, Soundcraft, and Martin on the lighting side. I would presume they will keep the bigger companies going, there must be profit to be had there.
Judge
There must be money to be made there or they would not have been snapped up by Harman in the first place. However, what Harman consider adequate profit is not the same as what Samsung consider adequate.Harman are insisting that none of these job losses are coming from Samsung, that they Harman are doing it on their own as part of "restructuring"I suspect that Samsung has said to Harman - we want cuts made and either you do it, or we will. Stuart91
I would presume they will keep the bigger companies going, there must be profit to be had there. But will they continue to provide the funds that allow for research and innovation, or simply cut costs to the bone and milk as much profit as they can? If it's a non-core business, Samsung won't care about the heritage or affection that people have for the brands. If they genuinely aren't interested, they'd probably get a better return from selling them off now than running them into the ground and flogging the remnants in a few years time.
