Black Box
I've got the task of re-wiring an analogue radio studio shortly, and I've decided to go with CAT5 for all the balanced audio cables between our punchdown blocks and the mixing desk, after reading numerous threads about it on here. Just got a couple of questions though, if anyone can help; - Do I go shielded or un-shielded (the cable runs are short...less than 5 metres, but we're concerned about cross-talk)- If shielded, does each pair need to be shielded, or just the core as a whole (does it make a difference?)- If shielded, I connect the drain wire to the ground pin on the XLR, but where do I connect it on the punchdown block end? Thanks guys.

Owain
- If shielded, I connect the drain wire to the ground pin on the XLR, but where do I connect it on the punchdown block end? You can get Krone modules in pair+earth configuration eg http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/46-101_KRONE-ABS-Module and multiple earthing modules eg http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/20128/46-020_TUK-237D-Module-red (Krone version discontinued; Krone-compatibles available)
Audixmicguy
I'd go shielded, if you are worried about cross-talk look for CAT 7 with twisted pairs
sandall
For such short runs it seems a lot of hassle compared with using FST or similar.
