dbuckley
From Reddit - a truck spilled its load of carbon dioxid in my hometown. [link]. http://I.imgur.com/mSzLwiI.jpg Yes, in theory this was a very dangerous situation. Luckily the only person injured was the truck driver. He tried to close the defective valve and got a cold-burn on his hand. Altogether about 22 metric tons were released. The reason nobody died or got seriously injured is probably that it happened in a larger city in Germany and emergency services are very quick and professional. They shut down the whole area and told everyone not to leave the house or enter the basement / ground floor. Then they checked every basement. This was done because the gas is heavier than air and stays close to the ground / behaves like water would.
