a bunch of such phones were wired together from a power supply, and that was comms.

 

A friend of mine worked at a festival many years ago where there was a pair of fax machines hooked up this way, one in monitor land, one at FOH. They proved very useful for sharing inputs lists, stage plots, etc.

 

Of course they also proved to be a source of much hilarity with various insults and anatomical diagrams spilling out of the machines throughout the weekend.
