timsabre
What's the best lubricant for sticky stepper motors in intelligent lighting fixtures? Stepper motors are not designed to need lubrication, if they are hard to turn they are probably knackered/cooked.Replacement of the motor is the most advisable thing to do if you don't want to be repeating the procedure in a few months time. If this is a personal project and money is tight you can try dismantling the motor and flushing out all the moving parts with WD40 or something then reassemble, but I've only ever had short term success doing this. ceecrb1
Agreed..Something like WD40 will be a temporary fix to get you though the end of the night or a weekends gig.. .but if a motor is stiff, it is time to get it replaced Be aware.. motor that has over-headed and expanded (internally) making it stiff, can be indicative of something else causing too much resistance...So when swapping out a stiff motor... also check the effect it is connected to...Eg it may be a zoom or focus lens sticking... The problem will just repeat itself if you do not fix the cause first.

Depends on the fixture but heat from the lamp due to failed or blocked cooling fans is the usual culprit in stepper motor cooking.
