The Phantom
Hi Folks, I need to pick your brains!!! Is there anywhere in Derby or Nottingham that you can recommend to service a couple of Transcension Dimmers as I have a couple of Channel failures on them and it's more than a fuse problem. Cheers Folks!
Stuart91
If it's more than a fuse, the obvious culprit is the triacs. It's not too difficult to replace these, the parts are available cheaply (~£2 each) and anyone reasonably handy with a soldering iron can replace them. A blown triac will usually mean the channel stays full on. Occasionally you find a "half blown" triac where the channel stays at roughly fifty percent, it can go above that level but not below. In both cases the triac itself is all that needs to be replaced.
parky58
DO NOT attempt to repair it yourself unless you are a qualified, experienced electronics engineer. I have repaired a couple of this make of dimmer myself and in addition to replacing faulty components I spent a lot of time resoldering poor wiring and making the units safe. In addition they must be tested by a "competent person" before being put back into service.

Hi Parky, I'd agree with your view that this is not a job for a novice to go tinkering with. However I want to make sure I'm interpreting what you wrote correctly, are you saying that, out of the box, the Transcension dimmers are unsafe? Can you tell us which model it was that you had problems with?
The Phantom
It's a Transcension DDP-405 Digital Dimmer Pack all was working fine until we had one hell of a big flash when switched on one unit and another two units had a couple of channel failures where the lights were constantly on and another where the channel itself is dead. As I mentioned I have checked the fuses so its probably a Triac problem. I appreciate the units are cheap but they do the job we use them for quite nicely - up until now.
