mikewarner
Hi, Can anyone suggest which lighting fixtures may have been used to create the moving Stormy Cloud and Lightning effect at Phantom Manor in DIsneyland Paris?Below are some videos and photos. http://farm2.staticf...b9a39567c_z.jpg http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ik-1gLNgF8w (From 6:57) http://land.allears....0Manor%2005.jpg http://a5.img.v4.sky...s/486485324.jpg The lightning bolts are probably just Source Fours with a strobe fitting. But I can't figure out what might have been used to create the cloud effect. The movements seem too straight for it to be a rotating effects disk. Any ideas? Many other photos and videos can be found online by searching: Phantom Manor (grand staircase) Thanks!
Don Allen
The sharpness of the lightning bolt and the colouring of the moving clouds suggests video projection to me. Looks like strobes are used on the steps.
Smiffy
IIRC White Light VSFX Disks for the clouds, S4's with Strobe Caps and glass Lightning Gobos, and then the sheet lightning achieved with generic DMX strobes. Cheers Smiffy

Cheers Smiffy Thanks for your reply!I thought it may have been some VSFX Disks but wasn't sure. Were you involved in the project or know who was? I'm curious as to how you knew which lights were used Mike
bigclive
Disney Paris have a preferred range of equipment they use quite a lot of. When I was there is was primarily High End movers, S4's, ETC dimmers, Allen Bradley PLCs and Optikinetic effect projectors. (plus other brands for other types of equipment.) Hi, Do you think it's likely that one of those fixtures was used for the clouds? If so, do you know which one and with what accessories? Thanks, Mike
Smiffy
If it isn't VSFX (and I'm 90% certain it is) then Optikinetiks is a logical second choice. Disney wouldn't likely waste money on video projection for that effect.

It's just that the clouds seem to move so horizontally, whereas with VSFX disks there's always some rotation obvious. How many do you think were used? They seem to change colour as they move along. bigclive
I'm not sure which equipment was used for that effect, but if it was an Optikinetics projector then it may have had a cloud disk and separate slower colour disk. The cloud pattern may have been custom or the design department may have made something themselves. Although Disney use standard equipment wherever possible, they do build quite a lot of custom effects themselves.
