Prolyte Stagedex wood staining

Looking at smartening up our prolyte stagedex, the black coated ply is showing it's age. My question is, can we just use an off the shelf black wood stain and can anyone recommend a stain which will be longer lasting?

When I worked at Live Systems (Edinburgh) we had deck that was a bit 'scruffy'. we used wood stain from Johnstone/Layland Paint.

It did dry a bit glossy compared to the matt finish on the original sections but lasted a lot longer before a touch up.
