Mixermend
I once repaired one of these - with the fault shown to be due to the TO3 power transistor leads NOT being soldered! The board was probably machine soldered in the usual way - then the large components, including the power transistors, inserted by hand later. Somehow after assembly - the soldering was overlooked. Due to the holes being plated through, contact was good enough to pass the factory testing - and indeed the unit worked for several years until one day it didn't! Despite being involved in the repair of equipment for most of my life - I will never say that I have 'seen it all'.......
bozallen
As boatman suggested I bought a new diode, got the old one out, cleaned up the board and soldered the new one in. The unit works good as new now! Can't be bad for a 9p diode. Thanks everyone for all your input and help! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol2TNRAFXjc
