Sanyo UF-15 Shuts down 30s after startup

Hi all. Looking for some help here.

We have a Sanyo UF15 Projector (old but good ish)

Been fine for ages and just recently it had developed a strange fault.

Powers up - strikes lamps ok

10s later shuts down and turns ready lamp red and flashes lamp and temp.

The fans are all working fine, filters are clear and nothing has changed obviously.

Ive swapped round lamps - tried pairs, singles and none and it does the same - so I can assume its not a lamp fault.

So...... any ideas? Sanyo service has no ideas

Its highly unlikely its a temp sensor fault after 10 secs, but almost certainly one of the fans that cools the lamps has stuck. Ive got various xfs which are a similar chasis and ive had severel that have had exactly the same problem caused by bits of glass from blown lamps lodging in the little fans and stopping them spinning. these fans start up after the lamps have fully struck and if the unit detects one not working it shuts down in the manner described. Its happened randomly long after a lamps been changed and it wouldnt be impossible for a foreign object to enter via the lens opening and work in. ...

To assist diagnosis, take the top cover off by lostening all the screws round the sides. there is a microswitch centre topish that you will need to press down as it wont fire without the cover and turn it on. You should see all the fans come on in sequence, the one that doesnt needs removed and inspected. all this neads no more than a p2 screwdriver, just dont touch the shiney bits...

if its not a simple stuck or broken fan, id send it to Multicare in Leeds as they are the experts. Its likely a simple fault so worth fixing. Whilst its there id suggest paying for a full optical clean and you will be restored to showroom condition. http://www.multicare.org.uk/lcdprojectorrepairs/lcd_projector_repairs.html

Fans in projectors like this are usually monitored both for operation and correct speed, since a fan failure could end up with a molten case.

I had one a while ago (might have been a Sanyo) where one of the fans worked perfectly from startup but slowed down too much when the lamp came on. The noise from the other fans masked the fault at first. Changing the fan was a nightmare, since the projector expected an NPN tacho rather than the more usual PNP tacho. A transistor bobbed on the pcb cured that!

The other thing is the lamp timer. Have you reset it from the service manual? I had this on a mitsubishi where the cpu decided the lamp was too old to keep running and to prevent risk of an explosion it turned it off as soon as you'd told it to switch on; flashing the temp or lamp light in some sort of code.

Multicare - ha. Called them yesterday and they suggested fans - we went round checked everyone and metered the sensor circuit with nothing found. They also suggested turning it upside down with the lid off and shaking it to get any foreign bodies out

Also re lamp timer - it never stays on long enough to be able access the lamp counters. Fair idea tho if it were possible

Did you fire it up as suggested and see the actual fans all spinning? if the fans physically stuck or has failed mechanically metering it will tell you nothing. There is no lamp timer in Sanyo units that shuts the unit down like there is in an nec for instance, it just nags you to replace, nothing more.

If there arent any foreign bodies in the fans stopping them spinning up, its going to need professional help, again id send it to Multicare, they Will fix it, its just a matter of how long it takes and how much it costs, however they will give you an accurate quote. You also have the option of using TP Matrix in Stockport, they are another approved Sanyo service centre, ive used both and find Multicare to be quicker, but TP matrix may be more convenient for you.
