sACN over Wifi

Don't know if this will be useful, but it is real life experience of sACN over wifi.

We regularly send sACN over WiFi - but not in theatre - using dedicated Tsunami P2P links from proxim, though there are many alternates available on the market. Burj Khalifa (6 universes) was programmed on a 24mbs link from around 650m line of sight up to a switch @700m on the fibre backbone feeding back down to the basement processors and back up to around 60 gateways. No visible latency. Typically we allow one universe of sACN 3mbs bandwidth. The same system was used to control 170 universes of sACN on a Pharos LPCX architectural system. We originally intended to only upload the new Pharos configurations from remote PC to LPCX, but working in output live from Pharos Designer on a laptop 1.5km away provided adequate real time results. Needless to say we were not broadcasting 170 universes from the laptop / iPad interface - but it shows how WiFi can be used successfully with certain control surfaces.

I must stress that all these systems are only programmed with wifi. The core infrastructure remains intrinsically connected with copper / fibre cables. I would never design a system with wifi where it can be avoided. Copper is good !
