topsy100
The qualification is a level 1 with students completing a portfolio assessed by myself and fully internally/externaly verified. The portfolio must meet the criteria of the awarding body who are NCFE. The qualification consists of 5 units. Unit 1 is compulsary there is then a choice of 2 units from 4 The 4 units being Lighting, sound, set and costume/makeup. Each unit has guided learning hours of 30.A certificate is awarded on completion. There are not 10 places left, there are only 10 places in total..... this is to ensure each student gets as much of my time as possible.Other sector professionals will be used as required. Below are a few questions which I can answer: 1. What equipment will we be able to use?In many respects this is not limited. What we must do is cover the criteria for the unit as long as we do this then we can use whatever equipment we want. 2. Do we have to actually light a show? The lighting unit does not ask specifically to light a show however as the programme tutor I would expect this to happen. The venue we will use is small but very busy with regular bands etc. I would expect the students to be involved with design/rigging and running of at least one event. 3. The specififcation says we have to assist - who will we be assisting?as this is a Level 1 qualification then students are only required to assist experianced technicians. However my experiance of delivering this qualification is such that I prefer the students to do it themselves with the required support rather than just assist. 4. is it all in the college?the simple answer to this is yes it is although any opportunity to use other venues will be utilised. 5. can we get credit for work outside? The answer to this is most certainly yes in fact as tutor I would actively encourage it by the use of witness statement and photo evidence. The college and venue are separate however both are in Darlington very close to main line train station. The tutor (me) has over 18 years experience in the events industry specialising in lighting design/rig/maintenance. I qualified to degree level in Teaching & Learning and am an apprentice trained Electrician. I have been delivering electrical qualifications at Darlington college for 8 years and have delivered the NCFE Level 1 Technical Theatre Qualification on three occasions, very successfully at Newcastle College. I am more than happy to talk in person to anyone who has more questions to ask on 01325503064 Cheers Tim
