MagicQ Problems with Apple Macs

I find it's quite awkward on OS X, much more stable on Windows (never thought I'd say that!) also I find that the OS X implementation of X11 is incompatible with the software that lets me use my iPad as a touchscreen, strangely it works fine on Windows in VMWare or Parallels and it's very usable - even more so with a touch interface.

Something I did think of last night, if you try installing the latest version of X11 on the mac http://xquartz.macos...e.org/trac/wiki, we've had reports that it is more stable than the version that Apple have released.

I have now installed it on Windows via VMWare, solving the problem and making me much more relaxed with it http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Do you know if it is possible to get MagicQ on the virtual Windows computer to speak to Capture Demo on my MacBook? I used to use this feature a lot, and I would prefer to keep Capture on my Mac if possible......

VMWare should have the various ethernet bridges to make that work. I've had VMWare bridge USB devices before between the host OS without any real problems, so ethernet should work. Make sure you have the right IP configuration setup within MagicQ and the client, and the host side, and it should work.

Hmm.....MagicQ on my MacBook can still interface to Capture and I get an output on Capture from it. I have copied the identical settings to MagicQ on the virtual Windows machine, and I get no response by Capture.

In VMWare I have 3 options for Network connectivity:

Share the Mac's network connection (NAT)

Connect directly to the physical network (Bridged)

Using: *Autodetect

* Airport

* Bluetooth PAN

* Ethernet

Create a private network available only to the Mac (Host Only)

Advanced Options:

Mac Address:

Which configuration should I go with, does anybody know?

Thanks to everyone that has posted - it is much appreciated! http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

That question is probably better off asked on a VMWare forum if I'm being honest!

"Create a private network" I'd guess is what you want. You just want a mini lan between the host and the client. Make sure you have the MagicQ IP set to the clients virtual NIC IP address.

That could be what I am doing wrong. In the Capture connectivity window I assume the ArtNet IP has to be the same as the MagicQ IP, however I only have 2 options in the Capture drop down box: Automatic, or AirPort (192.168.0.7). Neither of these seems correct, as I was under the impression that ArtNet had to be 2.X.X.X .......I am probably being really stupid here! What IP address should I give MagicQ, and which of the 2 options should I select in Capture?

Sorry for this thread going off on a tangent; by solving (or bypassing) the first problem I have created another http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif

Thanks for your help Wol,

Charlie

If you give two different computers the same IP address, they will get confused! It's like having yours and your neighbours house be the same postal address, and expecting letters to be delivered to the correct one.

You *must* have two *different* IPs for the two systems. Your client windows system, and host mac system, although on the same computer, are essentially two different computers.

You should have the system setup like:

Windows machine virtual network card = 2.0.0.1

MagicQ on windows = 2.0.0.1

Mac VMware virtual network card = 2.0.0.2

Capture on mac = tied to 2.0.0.2, *not* your WiFi internet connection.

Ahh, that makes sense. :)

Capture won't let me do that. I have taken a series of screenshots, showing the settings for each instance. Hopefully this will help solve the problem? http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

I apologise that this thread has gone all for so long, and thank you Wol for giving up your time to help - it is appreciated. Should you need any more screenshots just let me know http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Many Thanks,

Windows side looks fine.

The VMware window, under the "advanced" options, you shuold be able to configure the IP address in there I'd imagine. It's been a while since I used VMware, so can't remember for sure!

If you run "ifconfig" on the Mac in a terminal, you should see your usual Wifi connection listed, your wired showing as disconnected (assuming youre on wifi of course!), and then have another interface on 2.0.0.2. Once you get that working, it may be that Capture just works? Can't remember.

Worth a try though!

And typing 'inconfig' into Terminal yields these results:

Sorry I can't help much more - networking isn't my forte (as you may have noticed!) http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

It looks like the problem is you don't have an interface on the mac on the same subnet as the windows machine. It's the lines VMnet1 and VMNet8 which give this away. The virtual network between the 2 machines will be using one of the 2 interfaces, I'm not sure which one. So if you set one to be 2.0.0.2 and the other to be 2.0.0.3 (I'm not a mac user so don't know how to do this. Then you should be able to connect from the mac to the windows instance.

the two lines with 192.168.204.1 and 192.168.15.1 seem to be your problem.

Unfortunately, this forum really isn't the best place to be asking for help about a completely unrelated piece of software, so you're probably best off using google, or asking on a VMWare forum for how to do it.
