What does your college have?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm studying a HND in tech theatre in Swansea, but I don't think our equipment is upto scratch, I'm the last person on this course as everyone else has dropped off the course (since September) tomorrow I've got a course rep meeting between me the Students union and the Principal, I want to show him what other colleges around the country have to offer for student on this course.

So if you could please tell me:-

1. Where you are and what equipment you're using (only in regards to lighting though thankyou, although full tech equipment lists would be good.

2. If I did manage to get some money :( , how much money would actaully be needed to buy completly new equipment (desk, luminaires, dimmers, safety chains seen as how we don't have enough for the crap we've got now -_- etc) baring in mind our space is used by outside professional companies and the Student Union for balls, discos etc

Feel free to PM info if you don't wish to disclose it openly

Thankyou for all your help

Chris

PS I'm sorry if this is in the wrong topic

A couple of thing you need to know before you see the Principal.

1. He will have already signed a document confirming to the awarding body (either Edexcel, or Edexcel via a university partner) that you have the equipment to do the programme.

2. The minimum spec for the automated lighting unit - if you're doing that one, is set. It is however based on limited equipment

Your Prinicpal has agreed to the specs below, if you are offering the unit. he won't know, of course, as it will have just been given to him to sign.

A word of warning. If you are the only student left, the course won't run. They'll just scrap it.

In gereral, there is government start up funding for HE programmes, if the centre do their paperwork right! They get very good funding compared to FE, so a sizeable chunk should have been invested.

Anyway, here's the rules that you should know about.

Automated Lighting

It says:

Resources

This unit requires specialist equipment to be available to students. It is recognised that this equipment will be expensive, and centres should not attempt this unit without appropriate technical facilities . It is suggested that centres should have a limited range of equipment as part of their permanent inventory. Additional equipment could be hired in for short periods for specific purposes. As a guide the following list should be used as a guide to the minimum level of equipment needed to allow students to achieve.

Four moving head or moving mirror fixtures with independent control of intensity, colour, gobo selection and gobo rotation. Remote control of focus, prism type effects, CMY colour mixing and other advanced features are desirable, but not essential. In addition, at some time during the programme, students should have access to at least a further four fixtures. These extra fixtures may be of a reduced specification, but should still have a basic compliment of features. This will allow a minimum of eight fixtures to be controlled by students to complete their studies. Colour scrollers and similar devices are considered additional to these minimum standards. A hazer or smoke machine is a valuable tool to allow the visual effect of the lighting to be seen.

A control system capable of operating the available fixtures must be available. This may take the form of a dedicated moving light controller or more preferably the same controller that is used to control conventional lighting equipment. In this case the controller must have dedicated attribute handling facilities. A general DMX control is not suitable as programming automated lighting in this manner is difficult and time intensive and does not allow industry practice to be followed.

The other lighting operation units says:

A range of traditional lighting equipment comprising of Fresnel, PC, PAR and Profile type luminaires would be advantageous. Appropriate suspension and safety equipment should be available. For work aloft, it is recommended that tested safety harnesses and allied equipment should be provided. Dimming systems capable of controlling the luminaires may be fixed or portable types, although portable equipment may offer the best solution to the demands of the specification – certainly if any of the touring/Theatre in Education are selected. Although manual control equipment allows the specification to be delivered it is strongly recommended that a modern memory control system is provided.

Sound Operation says:

Students must have access to a range of suitable production equipment. At the time of writing this would include both analogue and digital recording equipment using both linear tape based systems and alternative storage systems using non-linear techniques. Industry standard equipment should be available including items such as microphones, mixers, amplifiers, loudspeaker systems (including monitor systems). There is a requirement that at some stage during the programme, students must be able to gain skills in radio microphone systems and communication systems.
