danielsan
I've been asked to come up with a few kilos of prop offal for a production of Gut Girls. It must look like real kidneys, liver, etc. and preferably be cuttable. Does anyone have any ideas at all regarding materials for such a task? James
The studios where I worked had an "artist" in to do a shoot involving him standing ankle deep bare foot in ofal with maggots crawling around between his toes. After the shoor he thought it wouldn't be a problem if he stored the leftover ofal under the sink in the darkroom for a few days while he thought of something to do with it. Moral of the story is - if you want to use genuine ofal beccause it's easy to get hold of and cheep, dispose of it well. (The studio was unusable for a fortnight, not just beccause of the smell, but the clouds of flies as the maggots hatched - so thick you couldn't see the oposite wall) James
paulears
I agree - same thing happened when doing little shop of horrors - somebody got a local butcher to provide it every day - till someone left the bucket overnight. The smell was appalling,
PeterT
It still smells but we made entrails out of copydex coloured with paint. Paint a thin layer onto a non porous surface and allow to dry as you peel it off, roll it up to make various lengths of guts. If you are going down the 'real' route treat it as fresh food and remove and dispose of it daily.

paulears
sorry if I've gone off-topic, but what exactly is fullers earth? - I've heard of it plenty of times - but never quite worked out what it is? paul

Apart from that I have no idea what it's original purpose was. Most prop workshops have a stash of it somewhere...
kalmatthew
sorry if I've gone off-topic, but what exactly is fullers earth? - I've heard of it plenty of times - but never quite worked out what it is? paul<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Used for many years to refine animal oil, vegetable oil, and mineral oil. A carrier for insecticides and fungicides. An effective absorbent for greases, oil, water and other chemicals. Used for litter and bedding for poultry, pets, etc. Also a soil conditioner for greenhouses and golf courses. Ben...
What about properly cooked offal covered in stage blood, stored in a fridge overnight, and replaced weekly? Not tried it myself - I fell victim to the "we promise to buy new offal everyday" line . Had to confiscate it eventually, and told them to mime it
oh lordy
Fuller earth is an ultra absorbent powder used in cat litter and by the military for absorbing chemical from chemical warfare

jagardner1984
Just a quick note of caution - if you are in Professional Theatre, you now need to dispose of meat waste properly - in a sealed container and uplifted by a specialist contractor. There can be fines of up to £5000 for breach of this. I know a bit about this as when I am not "Studenting" I work in a supermarket, and believe me if you have to empty out meat counters into bags and then store them in containers until the contractor picks them up, you soon get to know (and annoyed by) this new legislation. I think this is a reaction to BSE, Foot and Mouth etc, by ensuring Animal Waste is properly disposed of by businesses.
