Jobs or apprenticeships

Unfortunately there is no such thing these days as an apprentice rigger/flyer.

Speak to your local theatres and explain your looking to get your foot in the door, but don't be surprised if they say no. Although working in the fly's is a "specialist" job and you need to have a helluva pair of hands, it does tend to go as a "jack of all trades" position.

If your looking at getting rigging experience, speak to your local hire company that you know has a lot of rigging kit that goes out regularly.

However don't expect to become a truss monkey overnight. Once you've got a bit of work under your belt, get a good harness and then you can start getting more work and once you are competent and have a considerable amount of experience you can sell yourself as a freelancer.

As an example, I've been doing this for 7 years. I've toured and worked on a lot of large events in various positions, but even some of the folks I know have been doing it for 10 years plus before they get any "real" work.

Don't let that put you off however, but back to the point: Speak to local theatres, then once you get some experience wearing blacks, speak to hire companies and get on their casual list.

Don't Nippy Industries in Cambridgeshire take on apprentices? They may well call them trainees as opposed to apprentices, I can't remember - but I'm sure I've seen them recruiting for such positions ...

Nippy industries are definately very big on training and people working there way up, after working/chatting with someone who works there.

I read an article about them recently, think it might be in the most recent edition of L&SI...

Hi

Im finishing the Production Arts course at Bridgwater College and I am looking for either a job or most likely an appretaship in rigging and flying.

Does anyone know the best way to do this thanks

Hi,

there's no apprenticeship just in rigging and flying - There is a Creative Apprenticeship in Technical Theatre that includes rigging and flying and as Bridgwater is one of the founder colleges of the NSA: CCSkills you should be able to get more information from the college directly.

More info on Creative Apprenticeships (including many more links)

Or, as already suggested, if you have your heart set on rigging/flying then you'll need to start hunting for companies to work for/learn from.

PLASA member directory is probably a good start.

Depends on the context, I think, Dodge. From what I can recall, Nippy's apprenticeship scheme is a paid position.

Sure is... We normally take on apprentices and work through the NRC level 2 whilst becoming a full time member of staff..

We took on 2 apprentices at the start of May this year, and have previously seen several apprentices go through the NRC Level 2 and onto project managers before going out freelance...

The positions are paid, full time positions, with all the same progression opportunities as any other job. Unfortunately, we have now fully completed this round of recruitment.

We normally advertise through StageJobs Pro, so keep an eye out.

Hi Paul. When you say 'we', are you talking about the theatre in Stoke-on-Trent? I only ask for clarification, because that's who your profile says you work for but your post reads as though you're speaking on behalf of Nippy Industries ...
