Lasers

Hi, I did a search but couldnt find anything about my question.

In two weeks I am lighting a talant show, the director personally owns a laser (I dont know what type or power but will try to find out)

The show is being held in a small 98 seat theatre.

I have never used lasers before and I am not sure about the safety side of things especially about using them in such a small theatres.

If anyone could give me some advice that would be great.

If I cant find out the type or power of the laser by the show I will just tell him that I have never used them before and I am not confident about the use of them.

Thanks

Michael

Lasers throw up many issues and need to be risk assessed carefully even if small and particularly if there is a danger of pointing the laser at people directly.

Unless you can deal with issues adequately I would strongly recommend you do not use it.

Thanks for your quick reply!!!

Where ever I put them they would be pointed at someone because of the size of the venue.

I am just going to tell the director the problem and just say Im not comftable about using a laser in such as small venue.

Thanks

Michael

Despite a clear vote in favour of having a Laser Forum and a couple of specialists on the membership list, we don't really "do " lasers in here ;)

As recommended in several other threads, the place to ask laser questions is here.

That said, if you're not happy about doing something, because you feel you don't have the necessary experience and are not confident, that you can do it safely, then just say so. saying so will, in itself, effectively preclude you from doing lasers ;)

It doesn't matter that lasers are electrical devices which emit light and which can (of late, anyway) be controlled by DMX. They are a separate discipline to lighting IMO (a bit like power & electrics) - to the extent that someone with specialist knowledge should be hired to rig and operate them.
