greenalien
Since 'cost effective' is a major criterion here, if you're not averse to a bit of DIY, how about searching Ebay for a used moving-head luminaire - may need a bit of surgery to convert the light housing into a suitable platform, but it'd give you DMX control over pan and tilt, and you may be able to rig up a couple of the steppers in the head for zoom and focus control. I had this idea too and had a go at it but the slow movement is not smooth enough for camera use. At least not at a price which would make it affordable. Plus they're really heavy. Depending on what you need it for, the Hague ones are good, but the cheaper ones don't move very fast. Also you don't have control over camera zoom etc.http://www.b-hague.co.uk/pan__tilt_power_head.htm If it's for live use I would recommend a "speed dome" CCTV camera. You can get very high quality camera modules in them and have full control over zoom, iris etc. Using a programmable controller you can store and recall multiple preset shots which means someone can operate a couple of cameras and vision mix at the same time. Cost about 600 quid new but they come up on ebay quite a lot (check description carefully as some are dodgy chinese imports).
Pete McCrea
Another vote for the B Hague ones, but with an added LANC remote control for the Zoom and Focus. The other option would be one of the camera heads from Panasonic of similar. That said we're talking closer to £5K than £50....
