Ok, my good lady sings in pubs/ clubs. Amy winehouse numbers etc. She has some peavey speakers and a beringer amp which need replacing. We looked at the HK Performer package today and were quite impressed although we have heard some concerns about reliability. we were also recommended a yamaha mixer (not got the model number off hand). The I'm a complete novice at this so any imformation on a decent pa system (BUDGET £1500) would be fantastic. I also realise that £1500 is not a lot to spend. HELP!

Actually you would probably need a powered mixer so maybe this? http://www.thomann.de/gb/soundcraft_gigrac_1000_st.htm

I assume if you were looking at an HK LUCAS "Performer" it was second hand since it wouldn't normally get anywhere near your budget?

In any case, the LUCAS system has an excellent sound and is in a different league to the sort of thing you could buy new from Thomann for £1500. I'm not aware of any particular reliability issues other than the fact that the box construction isn't as rugged as true top of the line stuff. However, it's a credit to the ability of the HK stuff to "punch above its weight" that it gets compared to far more expensive stuff. I don't think anything in the construction would be an issue if the gear is for personal use--it's only in situations where stuff is being tossed in and out of lorries by ham fisted roadies that there are concerns.

As for a mixer, it's hard to comment on your Yamaha without the model number but, assuming it's in the MG range, they tend to be decent workhorses. Some have built in effects units--and I assume for a female soloist you'll probably want some kind of reverb unless you have one already.

As a general guide (and it's hard to be more specific with the info to hand) I think with your budget you'd do better with second hand pro quality stuff (so long as you can listen and check it over first) rather than super economy new things.

+1 on the second hand thing, might get more value for the budget. Where abouts are you ?

Firstly, this isn't a reccomendation, because I haven't actually heard this particular piece of kit being used, but I came across this today and was quite intrigued (and may well be arranging a demo myself).

http://www.tmcstore.co.uk/product_details.asp?ProductID=2113

It's a QSC K12 active cabinet which is VERY powerful for a small box (power isn't everything I know, but 1Kw per 12" box!!). It also only weighs 18Kg, a lot less than an SRM450 and a more powerful box (assuming the power ratings are RMS, I can't actually find it anywhere on the spec!).

Priced at £650 per box, it isn't the cheapest active cabinet in the world, but it still leaves £200 in the budget for a small mixer.

Like I say, not a reccomendation, but I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on these cabinets - never seen or heard them before.
